It is for states now to take the next steps for roll-out of goods and services tax as there is agreement on most of the contentious issues, said Parthasarathi Shome, Adviser to finance minister P Chidambaram.

“Union finance minister already indicated many things that he has put away some money for compensation, and in the last meeting with the finance ministers of the states, he indicated that he is agreeable to many of the positions that they (States) were taking”, Shome said on the sidelines of a conference here.

At the two-day meeting of state finance ministers in Bhubaneshwar in January, States reached a broad consensus on the design of GST under which states will be free to decide on the time of its introduction.

“I feel, now, it is for the States to come back and say (to the Centre), on what are the things they are willing to do from their part and then we can move forward (on the proposed GST)”, Shome said.
