An income tax employee fell prey to an online fraudster and lost Rs 98,500 from his bank account.
Nishanth Kumar, 29, a native of West Bengal, is an administrative staff member of the income tax department in Chennai.
Nishanth’s father-in-law informed him that he couriered sweets from Kolkata on November 11 ahead of Diwali. As he had not received the parcel till November 13, Nishanth searched for the customer care number online.
He found a number and called.
A man who received the call directed him to open a link and transfer Rs 5 from his bank account to track the whereabouts of the sweet parcel. When he made the transaction, the conman transferred a total of Rs 98,500 from his bank account in three installments.
Based on Nishanth’s complaint, the Thirumangalam police registered a case.
