In a move that comes as a huge relief to hundreds of tamarind traders in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, the central government provided an exemption to tamarind from Goods and Services Tax (GST). The president of All India Tamarind Merchants Association (AITA), D Radha Krishna and other city-based merchants on Wednesday, met Himachal Pradesh governor, Bandaru Dattatreya in Secunderabad and conveyed their gratitude to the governor for the help provided.
“The central government previously collected 12 % towards GST due to which as merchants suffered great losses. We represented our grievances to the union government through Dattareya and after two years, our efforts have yielded results,” president, All India Tamarind Merchants Association, Hyderabad, D Radha Krishna said. Presently over 50 traders run tamarind business in the city and are supplying the commodity to several parts of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and the rest of the country, Radha Krishna added.
