Fishermen from several states along the country’s west coast met in Margao on Monday to participate in a day-long conference to discuss the problems faced by them and taking appropriate steps to raise their issues with the Union government. Talking to reporters, a fisherman said escalating prices of diesel were affecting the incomes of those who own trawlers and urged the government to take steps to provide them with diesel at reduced prices by cutting down taxes.
They suggested that GST be levied on diesel to bring about uniformity on prices. Pointing out that 3-4% of India’s foreign exchange earnings come through marine exports, the fisherfolk sought incentives to boost productivity. Talks also centred around various issues like to fish trade and livelihoods of traditional fisherfolk, including CRZ issues, fishing ban, depleting volume of catch and largescale bull trawling affecting the marine environment .
