Starting 1 January 2020, consumers in Singapore will have to pay Goods and Services Tax (GST) on digital services purchased from GST-registered overseas service providers. Only locally procured services are subject to GST as of the current.
The amendment which was announced in Budget 2018, was intended to level the playing field in the GST treatment of services that are procured locally and overseas. Meanwhile, no changes will take place in online purchases of goods. Consumers are still required to pay GST on goods imported into Singapore, at the point of importation, with an exception on goods valued at $400 and below which are imported via air or post.
