The state commercial tax department has detected an almost Rs one crore tax violation in the payment of goods and services tax (GST) by a firm based at Kotdwar in Pauri Garhwal. According to officials of the department, the firm in question had not submitted any GST return details in this financial year which brought it under the scanner. “On Saturday evening, our officials surveyed the premises of the firm and found that there were several discrepancies in its accounts,” said a senior joint commissioner-level official.

“The firm is into manufacturing of steel and has an annual turnover of over Rs 10 crore. During investigation, it was found that for the purpose of saving tax, the firm had floated some dummy companies which were shown to be conducting business. When our officials confronted the firm owner with the relevant documents, he paid up Rs 40 lakh. Our investigation is currently going on about the firm’s total GST evasion in the current financial year,” said the official while speaking to TOI. He added that in Uttarakhand, over 20,000 firms are found to be not complying with the GST rules. “Strict action is being planned against these firms,” the official said.
